Being an instant Meemaw

My daughter, Kate, is in a relationship with a wonderful guy named Terry. With Terry comes his daughter. She is the most precious thing. She has started calling me Meemaw lately. (Southern style of Grandma)

Meet Lyndsie (Hair cut was done by another little girl, however, Lyndsie has been known to chop her own hair at times, too. This time…not her fault.)

This kid is bright and inquisitive. Talks A LOT. It makes me remember when Kate was that age. She never shut up. Even in her sleep.

Now, anyone who knows me, knows I am not a huge kid fan. Kids are messy, erratic, noisy, smelly…I did great raising my own brat, but I seem to not be able to tolerate other peoples kids. I never babysat, even in my teens.

With Lyndsie, it’s different. She seems she was just made to be near me. I rarely have to tell her to behave, she listens well, and she seems to really love the attention I give her. She and I do projects alone here in my office. We close the door so everyone knows not to disturb. Last night and today, since it rainy and windy and ugly, we had the emergency light sitting on the floor between us, and as I read, I gave her all my photos that I hadn’t put into albums yet and allowed her to do that. She was also allowed to keep one of the double prints, and since most of the pictures were of all six of my cats, and I usually always order double prints; she was thrilled.

She got the entire task done, and a hefty boot of pictures for herself. So, for doing that little chore, I gave her some stickers, and a promise that my next trip to Wal-Mart I will get her her very own photo album for all her photos.

As a little surprise to her, I am also going to order her some custom stickers from Shutterfly. There is also a particular picture of her and some of the cats that she loves, and since she is always playing with one of my magnets, I am going to make that picture a magnet for her.

She minds me so well. Very rarely do I have to bring out the mean Meemaw Laws.

Here at my house she has her very own room. I placed pictures on her walls of the cats, and some cute posters. She has her dressers, and she has her toys. Her own bed. The cats like sleeping in her room, too, which tickles her to death. Some sleep with her, others sleep in her window sill. It’s just the fact that they hang out with her. I tell her they are guarding over her.

There will be a custody battle, I know that for a fact. She is better off here, I have to be honest. We have so much more to offer, plus, the people that do come here, well…they are good people. She is exposed to an unsavory sort within her mother’s care.

But, I won’t get into all that. I tends to make me very hot tempered, and I don’t want to rant. Not after such a nice time with my granddaughter. J

My daughter seems to be a natural at being a mother, as well. She never wanted children, the not getting pregnant and giving birth part, so this seems to be the perfect instant family for her. And Terry is snipped, so there will be no accidents. They are all so perfect.

They actually take Lyndsie out into the world to discover things. The park, the petting zoo, the library. They do activities not centered at the house. However, they do sit down with their own store bought books to help her along in reading and writing. Just to give her a little edge up on her own school pace. And Terry is from German. He didn’t come to America until his teens and he joined the Army. He has a rich German background. So, and I pushed for this, they are teaching Lyndsie German as well. My daughter is learning, too. Lyndsies mother, while she and Terry were together, forbid him to teach the child German, ignoring the fact that being bilingual was a great advantage in life, and said that they would just talk about her behind her back and she wouldn’t know it. Petty, very petty.

Anyway. When we are allowed to have Lyndsie, it’s always a great weekend.

I am finding I really like this whole Meemaw side of me. Now, don’t think of me as all traditional…I don’t bake cookies and cakes. But we do talk about zombies and vampires and killer My Little Ponies. She loves my office for my variety of knick knacks and odd toys. She likes looking at my Living Dead Dolls, and cool movie posters and action figures. I get to teach her things that will bring out an appreciation of literature and writing. She has a great imagination, so we do verbal story telling together. She asks about some of the pictures on my wall. We have long discussions on some of the tamer stories of Edgar Allen Poe.

She and I also share a fondness for the relaxing color books. I buy her regular ones, with characters she loves, and I get myself the relaxation books. We sit and color together. I sometimes make us popcorn to share, or a small bowl of ice cream.

I do not watch movies with her, however. That kid can watch the same movie 6 times in a row. I get the songs stuck in my head, and that’s just a little too much happiness for me to handle…lol.

Well, this is just something I wanted to share. A little brightness in my world.

Be sweet, my darlings!
