NaBloPoMo: Day Five: The Horror Genre

NaBloPoMo_1114_465x287_NOV_zps8d81cd05Zoe_zpsa12e3212The Horror Genre. I love it. I have always had a fascination with it. I’m not easily scared or frightened in the least. Its more the depth and depravity that can be captured in the words (or images in films) that captivates me.

I write a lot of vampire themed things. I love taking bits and pieces from different folk lore, different author perspectives and my own ideas and merging them all together to try to have a completely new take on vampirism. NO SPARKLES. Blah.

Zombies is another favorite of mine. Different writers add their own twists to what a ‘zombie’ is, how they are created, how they act and react, if they think, etc.. I have dozens of books by some really wonderful authors who all have their own unique flare on how their zombies came about, what drives them and how the rest of humanity is dealing with them.

Werewolves. I don’t know a lot on the matter, I admit. But there is a loveliness to them, which to me boils down to the transformations. Again, everyone has their own take on it, but in the end, we see someone go from what society deems ‘normal’, into an animal or beast. The way these transformations are described (or played out with visual effects in films) is a wonderful thing to me. Gruesome and beautiful.

I don’t watch many television shows or movies that are not horror themed. I’m just not a mainstream person, don’t care for comedies and think romance is for the birds, though I do write it on occasion. I’m more about the sensuality than the mush.

We love to be thrilled. We love to be scared. We love when those fine hairs on the back of our neck stand on end and tickle in a little fear and anticipation. We love blood, we love violence, we love seeing beautiful, timeless creatures do unspeakable acts.

Does that make us morally bad? No, it makes us curious, and human. We fear what we don’t understand. And we love it. We get a thrill out of horror and being set on the edge of our seats.

So rejoice in the vampires, werewolves, zombies, witches, slayers and demons that haunt and delight our nightmares.

  1. I like this celebrating the things that scare us 🙂 And it’s cool that novel writers and screen writers are doing creative things with the creatures that have been around for a long time. But no sparkles on vampires!
