NaBloPoMo: Day Seven: My Music

NaBloPoMo_1114_465x287_NOV_zps8d81cd05tumblr_n8jv2iPPtG1qg98ddo1_500Music is a force to be reckoned with. It can motivate you, lull you, inspire you.

Music is important to me for many reasons. Pretty much anyone can say this.

I use music to set the mood of my writing. I use music to calm me. I use music to motivate me.

Do you set your writing to a ‘soundtrack’ of sorts? A lot of people do.

I listen to a pretty wide range of music. I like discovering new stuff. Classical, like Vivaldi, is a favorite, but I also have a deep love affair going on with Slipknot. String quartets move me.

I find movie scores to be fascinating, and they are a favored selection when writing. Some examples are the motion picture scores for The Fountain, Oblivion, After Earth, Gladiator…the music is so moving, touching. There’s sadness, there’s triumph, there’s haunting melodies that can darn near move you to tears if you really let your heart listen.

I tend to favor instrumentals for when I sit down to write. I am careful in my selection for the playlist for the mood and tone of writing. Though, some regular songs seem fitting as well, for their lyrics. When writing my RPs for my games, I tend to use song lyrics as titles.

Music is the beat of life. Always appreciate it. Always explore it. Look to the obscure for inspiration. Listen to the background music in your favorite movies and shows. The scores. You can find a trove of goodness there.

  1. If you haven’t listened to them already, I really recommend 2Cellos to listen to when you write. They do amazing covers of all kinds of songs, and are excellent to have on in the background. I find they really help when I write
